The trees they planted themselves

Sir told us the tree is ours now. I water it before class.

In 2018 we started planting saplings at schools across the district rather than on empty municipal land. The reasoning was straightforward: a tree planted by an official and left alone rarely survives its first dry season.

Each child chooses a sapling, digs the hole and plants it. The tree is then theirs to water. Teachers keep a rota.

Several of those first saplings are now taller than the children who planted them.
